"It is simply the biggest thing around for
a long long way."
-- Mount Mitchell employee
At 6,684 feet Mount Mitchell is the
highest
point in North Carolina
and the
highest mountain east of the Mississippi River. It is located in the 1,855-acre Mount
Mitchell State Park
which, having been
established in 1915, is
the oldest state park in North Carolina. Mount Mitchell is part
of the Black Mountain
range which is part of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Six peaks in the small range are among the
ten highest in the eastern United States.
It is possible to
ride to within two-tenths of a mile of the
summit. From there, a trail will take
you through a forest of conifers and mosses to the observation tower at
the top.
