Roan Mountain is a
6,285-foot mountain straddling the North Carolina and Tennessee State line. A part
of the Pisgah National
Forest, Roan Mountain is famous
for its' natural gardens filled with a
potpourri of wildflowers, rare plants including the Catawba
rhododendron, and 'bald' areas devoid of trees at the top which allow
for open and
awesome views of the surrounding mountains.
Boasting the largest concentration of blooming rhododendron in the
world the mountain hosts the Rhododendron Festival each year to
showcase these plants in full bloom. In addition
to the rhododendron gardens Roan Mountain is also home to Roan Mountain
State Park.
Once you reach the mountain the ride to the top begins shaded as you go through the state park and opens up as you
ascend. The road follows the shoulder of the mountain as it winds
its way up offering spectacular views that only get better as you
go.
